I know that you cannot legally require an employee to contribute to United Way, but can you legally require they

attend the kick-off meeting?  Our company is based in Missouri.

As long as it is during work hours and you are paying them for their time, I would think you could require attendance. I am in NC but I required attendance for the kick off meeting.

Thank you.  That's what we relayed, while on working time we require attendance at the meeting.  Our employee argued this was illegal, but we explained

that it was information purposes only.

If (s)he can't come up with a religious or medical reason for not being able to attend, I think it's going to be difficult to avoid. Crying
