THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN INTERESTING CONCEPT.  WE DON'T WANT A PROGRAM WITH SOME OF THE "CHEESY" PRIZES IN THE SAFTY CATALOG.  THANKS

We have a "safety kaizen" monthly competition members compete with other departments using the kaizen concept ( for those who are not familiar with the kaizen it is part of the "lean manufacturing"concept) members find safety hazards generate and idea that will eliminate the hazard take action on their idea and when completed they turn in a Kaizen. At the end of each month each departments kaizens are counted and the one with most gets lunch ( there chioce )on the safety department. This has increased Team spirit and safety awarness. When we started the program we were getting  an average of 3 to 5 kaizens per department our last winners had turned in 73 kaizens! THATS 73 SAFETY HAZARDS ELIMINATED IN ONE DEPARTMENT FOR ONE MONTH!!!!!

    Hi,

I would scrap the idea of an incentive as a material reward.  As previous contributors have pointed out that can lead to all sorst of cover up issues.

A scheme I ran early this year was a 'Survivor' competition based on the popular TV series.  Each value stream was designated a tribe name and each month they had to turn in various safety tasks to the tribal council to earn points.  These together with their safety rate, all counted towards their final score.  Important - they were rated on what they did for safety more than on their incident rate.

At the end of each month rather than throw the losing team off the island, the value stream manager of the poorest performing tribe, had to wear a grass skirt for the large management meeting, and their photograph was exhibited in the cafeteria for that month.

Now that got the management excited.  There was no way they wanted to wear that skirt.  The associates on the shop floor were motivated to do the best they can and keep their tribe up on top.

Yes the winning tribe did get a prize, they all got a tee shirt saying that they survived the island.

All this was done leading up to North American Ocupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, and our company won the most inovative award for Manitoba  (That's in Canada!)

We have found that having a reward for a section/department in the form of a catered meal/lunch seems to work very well.  This allows everyone to share in the good safety effort.  Like any program, a safety incentive program needs a lot of attention to assusre that no one has "swept under the carpet" any "minor" issues or near-miss.

    Hello jfb48,

I must say, this has been a great thread. Several offerings stand out. One is the safety kaizen from krieg. This is a great way to eliminate safety hazards. Another is the 'Survivor' / grass skirt idea. Real team work comes into play here. I also like the idea of documenting near misses as a way of preventing the real thing.

I must also thank Mike Kleier for his forward thinking article. This was a worth while read (Thought comes before action). I would like to thank one and all for participating!

You are correct in your statement Thought comes before action.  The url search you included has been very informative.  I work in the Marine Towing Vessel industry where we get the crew member thinking about safety behavior when they are first hired with orientation training.  Incentive promotions and programs can deliver the key focus on safety.

Great Article.  I sent it to my boss right after reading it and he liked it as well.  I was having a hard time trying to decide what direction i wanted to take the program in but that made it a little easier.

I use a "Safety Buck" program.  It is really simple.  I would be happy to share the complete rules with anyone who wants it. I have my leads, foreman, supervisors, managers and safety committee members give out a certain number of "Safety Bucks" each month when they see "Safe Acts".  We have four shifs and a really good follow through.  Our employees can use their "Safety Bucks" to buy company products and wearables.  From that program can come an employee of the month award or certificate.  The employees like to be recognized in this manner and it has booted morale.
