  • Conduct a rodeo...

I used to work in a retail building material center (lumber yard) as an operations manager, where we created a rodeo: an obstacle course competiton set up for situations that our operators faced daily (driving up and down ramps, when to drive in reverse, entering and exiting techniques, etc.).

It was fun, competitive and adopted by the corporate Fleet Safety Manager for use in other locations. It took time and effort to design a score sheet and course layout ideas, but the reward was well worth the effort. We turned  it into an annual location event, inviting family members for hot dogs and sodas. The company supplied T-shirts for competitors (designed by an artistic operator), a trophy and cash for the winner, and prizes gathered from our vendors through the year prior.

It truly was a blast, and another form of training and rewarding safe operators!

Do it once, do it well.
