  • Air or train business travel

There is a debate in my firm concerning the benefits of both train and air travel. Specifically, which should be used for shorter distances - Boston to Philadelphia, NYC to DC, etc. Amtrak is about as reliable as air travel, and about the same price, so the disagreement is really about time and the environment.

I am fall in the camp of train travel is better - less pollution, have time on the train to work, less hassle than getting and from the airport. However, a lot of my colleagues believe that short flights between cities are more convenient, and that in competitive corporate culture, absolutely necessary. Can any provide some support for either argument? The firm is trying to come up with a policy to address the issue.

I know this is an old topic, but...

Reasons for plane:  If something that could impact the company within a matter of hours will take place, if the trip is cross-country, or if there is an emergency that requires immediate presence.

Reasons for train:  The train generally has cheaper tickets if I'm not mistaken (unless you want a private car) and it's much more environmentally friendly.

If all else fails, take a bus or carpool.
