We train using DVDs a lot in our workplace. I need to ask for your opinion on something.

I have found these 2 old safety films which i would love to train with. One is a comedy on office safety, and the other, also a comedy is a more general safety awareness type DVD. One was shot in the 50's and one was shot in the 60's. They are so different and so hillarious, but the messages are still just as relevant today.

Something fun and interesting like this is a god-send in DVD terms. Now to my question. . . These films were obiously shot in a different era, and do contain a couple of lines or aspects to them which may be deemed politically incorrect these days. I personally don't mind the idea of looking back in time 'warts and all' if the safety message is still relevant.

I think it' an added bonus to see ho far we've come in terms of equal opportunity etc. What do you think? Would you show these?

My company's security settings do not allow me to view the videos, so I can't speak to them specifically. But I do know you have to be very careful about material that could be percieved differently from what you intend.

You might consider holding a "screening" with a representative group of your employees to see what they think. But even if they give them the thumbs up, be prepared to deal with the one or two who will take it the wrong way.

It makes me think of an episode of "Family Guy."  Peter is charged with sexual harassment and his employer has a video "from 1956" that shows giving compliments and a "firm, open palm to the behind" is okay (in that "era").  I'm far to young to even comprehend what society was like in those days, but I do know that it's ridiculous to live in fear of talking to anyone anymore in fear you may say something ambiguous and that person might try to find some lame excuse to file lawsuit.

I'm now giving a disclaimer:  "Family Guy" is fiction.  Any events portrayed in the show should not be repeated by anyone.  This includes (but is not limited to):  baby world domination, teaching your dog to talk, and/or firm, open palms to the behind.

I don't think I would use videos over 5 years old for training.  Not only can society change, but so can rules and regulations.  In the three years I've been with our company, we've changed videos twice.  Once because they were outdated and once because I felt like they weren't sufficient, which was a bit obvious when the host of the video talked about stinky feet and made electrocution look funny.  I wish we could get ahold of some graphic videos, but our head safety director and other management asked me, "Are you going to clean up the vomit if we get a weak stomach?"  I'm sure you can imagine that answer.

I like them and use similar retro videos during training as a tool to bring them back from break. I play them as appropriate to the next module or as a lead -in after discussing the changes in the present safety culture and regulations. I have yet to start a session without everyone in place and engaged.

As previously stated....I would use them unless the material is outdated. Check into the current revision and if no changes have come about....go for it. I have used some old type of videos just for basic general safety rules. I do sometimes go to youtube as well for forklift related or fire safety videos. One of the best videos I have seen was when we had live fire training earlier this year. The company came out and showed the video from CT where a metal band was playing a small club when the whole club went up in flames. Several local Fire Dept.'s use this video in some of their training as well.

John ~ What type of facility do you have? What types of hazards are present? I have a ton of videos that I can send to you if interested or relevant. Hi John,

I wouldn't actually use the videos you mentioned. Instead, I would use a professionally producted product that also fit with that "old" theme. We bought a video called "Dark Ages of Safety" and our employees loved it!! Check it out and watch the preview thats there. By using that video, we were able to give our employee's something different to look at, but also contained a very relevant and on point safety message.
