  • Fertilizer ban/restriction ordinance

Does anyone have any information on municipal ordinances for the restriction/ban of the sale or use of phosphorous fertilizers? We are trying to come up with something in conjunction with a water quality campaign to reduce algae growth.

    Thanks!

    riverlady,

Try municode.com. As you note in your posting water and wastewater requirements are usually at a county or municipal level. The standards vary widely depending upon location. If you have a specific list or localities, try their websites. They will often have the code posted online.

Municipalities around the country continue to ban phosphorous fertilizers. The City of Ann Arbor passed a ban in 2006 when the city faced a $1.5 million upgrade of its wastewater treatment plant to meet federal phosphorous water quality standards. A recent University of Michigan study shows 28 percent reduced phosphorous levels in the Huron River the first year after the ban.
