  • dried blood contains disease?

I have heard it argued both ways, but I am trying to determine whether or not dried blood can contain such diseases as HIV and Hepatitis. Our safety plan for BBP requires PPE with dried blood situations, but I am just curious with this. Can anyone tell me if dried blood hosts HIV or anything else?

Hep B and Hep C can live outside the body for a significant period of time, as much as a week or more.  HIV is not capable of such long life outside the host, but I wouldn't want to gamble my life or anyone else's on estimating how long the virus has been outside.  The concept of universal precautions is intended to make this question moot.  Always treat any bodily fluid (dried or not) as hazardous and take the appropriate precautions.

ctech,  Just came across your post from 2007... a bit late for me but can you possibly give me a reference?  EPA has limited infectious waste to include 'only' blood that is pourable quantity.  Trying hard to argue and get them to include all blood/body fluid contaminated gauze, bandages, tissue, etc.  Thanks,  Russ

    Tcroley,

From the CDC website, How long does the hepatitis B virus survive outside the body? Hepatitis B virus can survive outside the body at least 7 days. During that time, the virus can still cause infection if it enters the body of a person who is not infected.

go to http://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/index.htm, choose your specific version of the disease, choose "For the public" option. Under the FAQ section choose "Transmission/Exposure". Fint the question "How long does the _______ virus survive outside the body?"

    Thanks,

     MikeCJ
