  • Days Away - Work Comp vs. Attendance

I was curious what some other companies were doing with their attendance policies for injured employees that voluntarily take unscheduled days off due to pain from a work-related injury.  If an employee has been released with restrictions, but then claims to be in too much pain to work one day, what are people doing in this situation?

A)Documenting the abesence subject to normal attendance policy, i.e. as an attendance occurrance.

B)Having the employee call the doctor and get a note and excusing it if the doctor says they should be off.

C)Not documenting the absence at all.

    D)Other (please explain).

If the employee takes off work voluntarily, it should be treated as any other person taking off that is not injured.  If the injured has restrictions from the Dr. that you can accommodate, then the employee should be at work!  I would not have the employee call the Dr., the Dr. has already made his/her decision with restrictions.  I have had employees take Family Medical Leave in these situations to avoid an attendance policy violation.

The Dr. has given restrictions, you as a company can use that employee with those restrictions, the employee should be there!

     Hope this helps

I have employees who take off due to an injury get clearance from the doctor before they can return to work.  If I did not do this, we would have employees taking off work just because they felt like it.
