Just wondering if anyone on here has any experience with the type of equipment pictured and described below.  I'm interested in any kind of safety precautions, procedures, tips, etc. assoiciated with this type of machinery that may not be included in the manual.  Real world stuff that has come up while working with or around this equipment.

    Shredder

Designed for processing plastic waste for reclamation and recycling, large extruder purgings, large reject parts, trim scraps, baled or loose film, synthetic fiber, wood processing scrap, medical waste, cardboard, paper and carpet.

    Thank you.

The first things that come to mind are the most obvious ones...

    1. Does the machine have proper guards to prevent contact with nip points, moving parts, gears, etc.?
    2. Can the machine be properly locked out (perhaps a locking plug cover would do)?
    3. Is the discharge section guarded so debris will not create a hazard?
    4. Is PPE required while using this machine?
    5. Does this machine have a secure base so it won't tip over?
    6. How much training is required (if any)?

One other thought. It would need rails/guards to prevent someone from falling in.

Also Light curtains, safety mats and dead man switches are good choices. I would also create an energy control procedure. This will need to cover all instances required to lockout the equipment.

We run a half dozen of them. First off, they are loud! Secondly they can be clogged by overstuffing them with material. One would think that a 300HP motor would chew through everything but it is nessessary for your workers to not to try and cram in material. Also the discharge blower tubing will wear through eventually so  you will get the feeling it is sleeting when you walk by them and feel the bits of plastic hitting you.

Ours are mounted up about 20 feet in the air.  Accessing them for maintenance and clearing jams, creates fall protection issues.
