    Dear JADAMS,

We are starting an observation program to get the rest of our personnel involved in the process. The bonus program has worked well for instilling drive in the supervision now we need to work on the behaviors of the rest of the personnel. Recently we purchased a few contractors and in reviewing their accident files, most were tied to acts or behaviors that caused an unsafe condition. I believe if we can change the behaviors we can minimise the exposures. This tied with the supervisor bonus program will become a two punch system sure produce results.

As far as building a bonus program, design an inspection sheet around the work they are performing. Brainstorm with ee's that have performed the work to identify all  potential hazards. With management come up with an agreed upon bonus amount and a fine amount for each of the lines within your inspection sheet. Be carefull not to fine so heavy that it wipes out the entire bonus in one inspection but large enough to gain their attention. Training should be done with each of the supervisors so they are aware of the program and the expectations. We would do dry runs with each of the supervisors so they knew how it worked. We called it their one "freebee". All inspections after that counted. One of the keys is to only fine for that which they have control. Our findings have shown that some buy in quickly, others after they have seen the process and have become comfortable with the measurement and for some not till after they have seen someone actually reap the rewards. It is not uncommon to see competition between certain supervisors and an amount of peer pressure by spouses when they understand that they have controll over the bonus amount.

Good luck, You have my email if you have any more questions.

I work for a construction company and we have played Safety Bingo for the past 5 years.  Our program is set up by crew and monetarily driven.  Any crew that has a preventable incident / accident, does not wear their PPE or has equipment damage is disqualified for the month.  I pick 5 numbers every week until someone hits BINGO.  The B-Safe winner receives $200 and each member of his crew receives $40.  Some of our crews have over 30 employees working together.  Our shop monitors maintenance and damage and notifies me of any abuse or damage. We were concerned at first that incidents and accidents would not be reported but this has not happened.  Our EMOD experience rating reflects this.  Our program costs our company somewhere between $6500-$8000 a year.  A safety incentive program does not need to be complicated, you just need to get everyone to buy in on it and we have accomplished this.  Good Luck!
