Anybody out there currently use a safety incentive program? My boss just came back from a conference with an idea for me  to set up an incentive program.  His plan is for each department to "compete" against one another for best safety record. But we haven't discussed the best way to do it - i am sure it is complicatd.  .

If you are using one, what kind of program do you use? Does it really work.  Any ideas or  info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't like "compete" programs, they don't build team work. In the workplace today, violent situations are becoming more prevalent. The focus should be more on heading off violent situations before they happen, rather than how to deal with them after they occur. By teaching employees the importance of teamwork (TEAM-Together Everyone Achieves More) the goal of management is achieved. Employees can share in the enthusiasm and pride of a job well done, as well as the importance of each individual's contributions in working as a team, rather than focusing on disappointments or comparisons with co-workers that could foster hostile feelings. If you give to one, give to all. They will work together to get the job done.

At our company we set up a contest where we had a series of questions. The questions were always the same, but the answered changed week by week. We have 4 start times at our company and each were a team. We had a team captain, which was a member of management. Each team captain could ask all of the other teams these questions and if an individual on that team answered the question correctly their team receieved a point.

Each team that has the most points at the end of each quarter would win the contest and gets to choose what they would like as their prize. We limited the prizes to food and such.

    Linda,

We are trying to jumpstart an employee involvement program in an effort to change our safety culture.  I would be interested in any guidelines you use in your Safety Bucks program.  You say you have safety bucks printed in different demoninations - how do you decide what each safety contribution is worth?  Is the program easy to administrate?  Our goal is to increase associate awareness, at home and at work.

Thanks for any information you can share with me.  My email address is cindy.garver@hitmet.com

I am interested in implementing a new program to recharge our employees.  We are a service company with employees spread out all over California.  We primarily do our safety training by mail since it's impossible to try and get all employees together.  We are a service business, so our turnover is pretty high.  I'm thinking of safety bingo but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
