That is true that one does not NEED to have a license. OSHA only requires proof of satisfactory training to be kept by the employer. However, many employees feel as though they should have something to indicate their authorization to operate powered industrials trucks.

Here at Micros, we all have to carry electronic identification / key cards to gain entrance into the building. We normally have them in plastic sleeves with an alligator type clip for attaching it to your belt or pants pocket or a retractable device on the belt. The cards I designed are credit card sized and fit very nicely in the back of the employee magnetic ID cards. In this way, each operator would have "proof" of training should an OSHA inspector pop in one day.

I heartily agree with Dave. I have been certified for sit-down counter-balanced (SDCB) forklifts many times. However, my current employer uses a particular type of SDBC from Landoll called a Bendi. It is designed for narrow aisle use (as little as 7 feet). Where normal fork lift rear wheels do the steering, the Bendi has a forward fulcrum that turns the forks instead. This truck handles totally different than any other SDCB I have driven. The balance triangle changes differently. Guiding in and out of racks with the load is done in a different manner. I truly believe that being certified for a generic SDCB truck did not automatically qualify me to drive this new beast. New employees must be certified to operate the employer's specific vehicles under the conditions in which it will be operated.
