To retain Red Cross certification in first aid, the CPR course must be taken every year.

In El Paso, we need to re-certify every year. The American Heart Association makes so many changes all the time that it is always good to re-certify and keep the certification up to date. Check with your local American Heart Association or the office where you received your certification and they can answer your questions for your city or state.

hello i work for zee medical in ca. and we offer training in cpr/first aid, we have two training programs one is american heart training which is good for one year and we also have medic first aid cpr training which is a two year certification.

As others have said,  the time varies depending on the level of training -  lay responder, professional rescuer, etc - and who certifies the training - AHA, Red Cross, NSC or other provider. However OSHA's new Pub 3317-05N 2006 "Fundementals of a workplace 1st Aid Program" recommends annual refresher training for CPR,AED and treatment of life threatening injuries with periodic retraining for other injuries.The pub can be downloaded at www.osha.gov.

As A 1st Aid, CPR and AED instructor I strongly recommend that anyone who has not been recertified in the last two months get recertified as soon as they can. The changes which have been made as a result of the ECC-2005 released in December of last year are significant and have a major impact on lay responder protocols. The new protocols can have a positive effect on patient survivability,as well as both short and long term outcomes. Hey all,

   I am an EMS instructor, and teach American Heart Courses.  The certification cards are good for two years.  However, it is suggested and if you so choose to require your employees to go though class once a year.  I have been in the fire service for thirteen years and all of the FDs I have been with make everyone recert every year evn though the card is a two year card. 

The levels of CPR depend on how many hours it take to certify.

Health Care Provider takes approx 4-6 hrs

Heart Saver Cpr/AED and First Aid approx 6-8 hrs

One year with most training, but with the company we buy our safety supplies the training is good for three years.  Shop around and find the best deal for your company

cpr/first aid. before you run off and take classes check with your states osha dept to see whats accepted. i know they will accept red cross but even though plain jane company teaches it osha may find that kind of company not accetable. what you can do is have someone train at your work place as a instructor. make sure you get something in writeing from osha saying they will accept their training certification to train employees at your job. its best to do it in large groups rather than several at a time.

CPR certification is valid for 1 year

First Aid certification valid for 3 years

We train over 400 people a year at our facility.  We use American Heart Association certification which is good for two years, but we train every year.  The problem with most training to stay in compliance with either Red Cross or Heart you need to watch your student instructor and student manikin ratios this means that to do the job right you need a number of instructors on your payroll.  Next week I'll be certifying 7 more instructors so we have enough instructors to do the job.  The new practice while watching the video training method works well with large groups if you have enough instructors to monitor the class.

I am an instructor and offer American Safety and Health (ASHI) programs.  I try and limit my class sizes to 12 as I am the only instructor/owner of my business and it allows me more one on one time with a student.  I offer only 1 year certifications in CPR/AED as when you don't use the skills people tend to forget especially now with the new changes. I teach mostly for large companies and their Medical Emergency Teams.  I also set these teams up for companies along with real life drills to test their skills.  I love my job.
