  • "Walkie" training

I'm curious about what people are doing for their forklift training in GI.  I have a couple of rider lifts but I also have about 20 powered pallet jacks.  A couple of these don't lift the product they simply assist in moving from one location to another, a couple of them do lift over the head, and several of them don't assist in moving the product but are powered to lift it to about waist-high.  What are my training/certification requirements for these different types of lifts and what are other people doing?

    Thanks,

It sounds to me like the powered pallet jacks might fall under the Powered Industrial Truck rules:

1910.178(a)(1):  "This section contains safety requirements relating to fire protection, design, maintenance, and use of fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines. This section does not apply to compressed air or nonflammable compressed gas-operated industrial trucks, nor to farm vehicles, nor to vehicles intended primarily for earth moving or over-the-road hauling."

The ANSI code might be helpful as well:  American National Standard for Powered Industrial Trucks, Part II, ANSI B56.1-1969

    Hawk,

The 2005 version of ANSI/ITSDF standard provides the following definition for powered industrial truck " Any mobile power-propelled truck used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack or tier materials." Based upon the standard it looks like the powered pallet jacks are included.

The B56-2006 document is available for free at http://www.itsdf.org/pB56.asp

Virtually anything used to lift and/or move material at ground level is covered by the powered industrial truck standard. Check out the materials on the OSHA site. Walkies are a type of powered industrial truck listed.

The devices used strictly to lift product are lift tables, not PITs. (Unless you are using a PIT as a lift table(?))
