  • Big Smile [:D] June is National Safety Month

Does anyone out there have any special activities that they do during National Safety Month?  Last year we did safety poker but it really wasn't good for our organization because we have almost 700 employees and 13 "Stores".  I am looking for new activities for this year.

    Thanks!  Smile [:)]

How 'bout a safety treasure hunt?   Take pictures around your facility, or look around for suppliers of "what's wrong with this picture" examples. (i know BLR has a booklet on hazcom called Photochecks: Real Situation Pictures that might help.  If you take photos at your own facility, you might want to avoid pics of a person doing something wrong so you dont embarass them (or clealy state that your incidents were staged).  For the contest, let folks send in their entries with what is wrong -  and you either get a winner or draw for ties. Or make everybody who enters  a winner.

Consider a contest for the month centered around the number 1 safety problem in your facility.  If there are no near misses, incidents or injuries - everybody shares in some prize like a pizza lunch, or put names in a hat for a drawing on an ipod.

Last year we did 4 contests, one for each week of the month.

We have a lot of employees too.

We did a Hidden Picture contest hiding safety items. I found an artist on line and she custom drew our facility with hidden safety items, mostly personal protection. It was a big hit. I can give you her # if interested, she was very helpful and reasonably priced.

We also did an electronic scavanger hunt, we had a few questions and they had to go to sites to get answers, like OSHA etc.

The year before we had Safety scratch off cards and had some instant winners, but all qualified for the drawing for big prizes. I found the site on line also. The employees enjoyed the instant winners.

Have you done the scratch off cards yet?

We did that two years ago and had many instant winners in addition to our drawing. We made up our own safety questions and they had to scratch off the correct answer to be eligable for the big drawing, but there were many instant winners and for those we gave away our company items as the prizes and they still could enter the big drawing. It was a big hit. The cards were reasonably priced and we had them printed with our safety logo. Turned out nice.

Would you happen to have a copy of your electronic scavenger hunt that I could take a look at or do you have examples of the types of questions that you used?

Wow, I didn't think about a contest during National Safety Month.  I love the idea.  I'm a member of the Nat'l Safety Council, so I keep up on each year's posters and everything.

kscollon1 - can you share with me your safety poker? my email is nicole.graham@ditan.com THANKS!

Also, if anyone else wants to send me their ideas I would greatly appreciate it.  We have 7 locations, all in a different state with about 185 employees.

    Thanks,

    Nicole

    Hello All,

I have not previously thought of having a safety game/hunt for Safety Month.  I would love to have any information you feel comfortable sharing.

    Email is nicole.graham@ditan.com

What about safety bingo or safety jeopardy? I have all the files for safety jeopardy, but I have not attempted it yet.  If anyone would like a copy I would be more than happy to forward to you.

    Thanks!

    Thanks,

    Nicole

Please share the safety poker with me, we have only 200 employees.  Sounds great.

I made a body stuffed out of old clothes, with a balloon for a head. I laid it out in the middle of the training room, like a crime scene, with various possible causes around it –- a stepladder, power tool and cable, some bits of wood, chemicals etc. The body was also wearing PPE incorrectly, and there was a jobsheet next to it with obviously too many jobs for one day (to suggest stress).

Then I covered most of the body up with sheets before anyone arrived so you could only see parts of the ‘causes’ and the body. It certainly intrigued the students as they arrived and registered, and we started our course with a dramatic reveal of the ‘crime’. I put them into investigation teams, where they had to guess what had actually caused the injury, and then how it might have been prevented. After about an hour of intense activity, we had actually worked through about half of the content of the one day course, and they had been actively engaged in remembering it in great detail.

The only problem I had was sneaking the body in (hidden in a bin liner) under cover of the early morning mist in the car park!!!
