What is you situation? Is low hazard or highly hazardous? Are the visitors in close proximity to the hazards? The hazards will dictate your policy.

You can keep it simple in order for employees to follow the program:

    • All visitors must sign in and out
    • Visitors must wear a badge
    • Visitors must be escorted beyond this point
    • Visitors are not allowed to use this equipment

The biggest problem we face is employees allowing former employees in and allowing them to roam the building without being escorted.   This is a big security risk.

Here's a generic one you could tweak to fit your needs:

    Compliance & Risk Management
    VISITORS’ SAFETY POLICY
    January 8, 2007

    1. VISITOR NOTICE. Welcome. ABC Company is committed to making your visit a safe and healthy one for you and others in the workplace. It is for that reason that we require all visitors to ABC Company grounds, facilities and workplaces to abide by the following safety rules while they're here.

IT TAKES THE EFFORTS OF EVERYONE WORKING TOGETHER - INCLUDING VISITORS - TO MAKE ABC A SAFE & HEALTHY WORKPLACE

    1. LOGGING IN. All visitors to ABC Company shall come to the reception desk at the main office and sign the visitors log immediately upon arrival
    2. HAZARD/EMERGENCY PLAN NOTIFICATION. As part of the log-in process, you will be given a sheet describing the hazards of the workplace and the procedures to follow in case of an emergency.
    3. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT. All visitors must use and wear the following personal protective equipment at all times while visiting the plant floor [list the PPE that you want visitors to wear]:
      • Safety headgear approved by the ANSI
      • Safety glasses approved by the ANSI, etc.
    4. RULES OF CONDUCT All visitors must obey the following rules of conduct at all times:
      • Follow all verbal instructions and signs
      • Don't touch or attempt to operate any machine, device or equipment unless told to do so
      • Don't talk to or distract workers operating machines, devices or equipment or engaging in safety-related functions like traffic control
      • Don't engage in any pranks, horseplay, contests, feats of strength, running or rough and boisterous conduct
      • Stay out of restricted areas
      • Report all injuries or problems immediately, no matter how minor
    5. LOGGING OUT. Visitors must leave through the same reception area in which they entered and log out.
    6. NONCOMPLIANCE. Visitors who fail to follow these policies will have their visiting privileges revoked and be asked to leave. ABC Company shall not be responsible for injuries visitors suffer as a result of violating these rules.

We are a metal stamping facility.  We currently have a security guard.  The main issue we are having is controling lunch time visitors and vendors.  We have complaints from our associates that people are breaking into their cars.  We don't  prohibit employees from bringing their visitors inside the facility, but most don't.

I like this idea and I'm working on putting this in place here too. Does anyone know where to purchase a small sign-in station that can be bolted to a wall for this purpose? I'm planning to keep a book with the policy posted, along with a log and copies of our list of hazards.

Add to the policy as to how you want visitors to respond to any facility emergency.  Evacuation plans, follow your guide, etc.

In addition you should make them sign that visitor policy then issue them a card.  To enter the facility they must have the card on their person.

I would forego the board and use something like a three ring binder with a new daily sheet to track arrival and departure times. In the event of an emergency and everyone were required to evacuate the area, this can be taken with you and used to confirm head count.

We're in the process of implementing the policy. We're not requiring the visitors to sign anything except a visitor registry. They will be given a card on a lanyard and escorted by an employee. We have included what to do in case of an emergency evacuation in the plan. Thanks for the responses.
