  • ASP Certification

Recently a colleague told me that I really should get my ASP certification.  Before I embark on that quest, any body like to give advice on how valuable that will be as a fairly new safety advisor for my small manufacturing company, as well as provide advice on how best to prepare for it?   Thanks

I would be curious too.  My manager told me that in order to get my next pay increase I would be a lot better off with some kind of safety certification - is this the best one to get?

This is getting to be what every employer is requiring.  I am just starting to prepare for the ASP.  I do have some software to study from - it helps.  Keep in mind that the ASP as well as the CSP certifications require a specific amount of experience/education before you can set for the exams.

Here is a link for more information.

Find your local NASP (national association of safety professionals).  Or go to the website.

They have several certification programs.  Very good program.

Tracy, I am sorry if I offend you, but the NASP is not the same as the BCSP.  The CSP & ASP is a board certified certification that requires a lot of time (five years minimum) and two lengthy tests to complete.

If anyone is interested, I have a PC based software study program for the ASP exam that I would be willing to part with.  It is made by Datachem software, and contains both a study program as well as practice exams.  Originally over $200.  Make me an offer.

The ASP is the certification you have to get prior to the CSP. These are the two highest Safety Designations safety professionals can get. with these however you have to basically qualify to sit and take the tests then you have to continue your education by way of safety seminars and such to keep the designation.

    EHSpro,

What a horrible statement to make! The NASP and IASP are excellent certification resources.  The canidate practically has to write a 600 page book for the certification.

I am a global EHS executive. I hire all of the aformentioned, and I know that my peers at EVP/CSO/CRO or above agree with my line of thought.  A true safety professional is not one by virute of the CSP/CIH or designation.  As long as the enjoy the art of accident prevention, the ASP, CSP, LSP, ARM does not matter as long as they achieve their goal.

In addition, the NASP is recongnzied by the federal government equal to the same designation of a CSP...and the LSP is acceptable throughout the globe.

    Tracy...trust me...either route is fine.

I never saw him say anything negative about the NASP.  I had never heard of it so I looked at their website.  Here is the difference between the NASP program and the BCSP program

    BCSP program:

Is a certifying body for those safety professionals with degrees from an acredited college or university.  It is a normally a 5 year process AFTER you finish college.

    NASP program:

Looks like from the website as a program of home study for those who are in the the safety field or want to be and either don't have a collge degree or don't have the time/resourses to aquire a degree.

Either one is probably satisfactory but are for different needs.  If you have your degree the ASP/CSP is probably perferable, if you don't have a degree the NASP program is probably fine.
