  • Safety Jackpot

I was doing some research as a result of the Safety Incentive Programs posting and noticed that a large portion of the big name companies (Pepsi, Autozone, FedEx...etc) use the Safety Jackpot program. If you go to the Safetyjackpot.com website you can find out more information. Has anyone else tried using the program if so what are your thoughts on the program?

I have not used Safety Jackpot.  I have read about it.  The problem that I see is that it could promote favoritism.  Depending how the tickets are handed out.  If it is done as a group or rules are VERY clear, it might work.  If the supervisor gets to hand them out for good deeds or going above and beyond, then you will have some employees complaining about not getting a card.  “Dave got one and I did not and I did the same work Dave did, you like Dave better, you are discriminating against me!!”

I’m sure the Jackpot works or you would not see it about everywhere, I just think you have to be very careful how the cards are handed out and have very clear and precise rules.  When I have had safety incentive programs, I have made my last rule; “Management has the right to change or discontinue this incentive program at any time.”

It is a good thing to get this information from the forum.  I hope someone else addresses this with experience in trying the Safety Jackpot.

    Good Luck

Yes, we are going on our second year with this program and it has worked well for our company. Of course there were problems having our employees buy into the program but after two months when employees saw other employees receiving very nice prizes or cash they got into the program. If you would like more information on our program please e-mail me.

The scratch tickets are placed with our employees pay checks each week. To qualify for one of the tickets is fairly simple.

    1)     No injury for the week

    2)     No damage equipment

    3)     No safety violations

    4)     Work a forty hour week

    5)     Non report of an injury will make you indelible for six months

We also have used Safety Jackpot for Two years now.  We are in the 2nd phaze which is the Gold tickets.  You can set up your own criteria for the program.  We have a 10K jackpot drawing annually based on the size of our warehouse.  That doesn't mean the person who grabs the bags wins 10K, our first person won 500$.  However, they can win 10K if they draw the two bags with the 10K voucher in them.

Our Criteria is similar to the other person who responded:

No Preventable accidents, No absentieesim or tardiness, etc. We hand out 1 card per week, and a bonus card for the month.  It is based on individualism, so you aren't relying on weather your whole department goes without an incident.  You have opportunities to earn extra cards though with contests, going ABCD, etc.

I strongly feel that there needs to be a complete safety program with toolbox talks, safety committee, etc.  This alone will not reduce you injuries.  In fact, our stretching program we just rolled out in September has reduced our injuries far more significantly than the Jackpot program.  But it's just like anything else.  You have to continually talk about it and "sell" it to the employees for it to be effective.

We tried to implement this program but had a lot of issues with the company and the employees.  It seemed that the employees were starting to make safety issues to get a better gift then his buddy.  The company would take the scratch offs but it took them over 2 months to get some of the gifts back to the employees.  Sad

Personally, I don't believe in long term safety incentive programs.  I like to change things up a few times a year. However, I wanted to give you an employee's point of view.

My husband used to work for a large cabinet manufacturer and they implemented the Safety Jackpot.  Having me as a wife, he immediately recognized the advantages.  He and his coworkers really liked the program.  He would tell me how it would become a topic of conversation each week at work (people talking safety!) and how everyone would get on to someone if they were hurt - because they would lose tickets.  There was a lot of excitement over the program.  People would exchange tickets though, and sell them - but you have that with any program.

I may try the program in the future - but I wouldn't do it for more than 3 months.  Just so my staff doesn't get use to the same ol thing...
