  • Forklift refueling procedures

Does anyone have written safety forklift refueling procedures or website to obtain these procedures? - specifically refueling propane powered industrial trucks, while the cylinder is on the forklift.

Everything that I have read is the cylinder is removed, begin fueling procedures, place full cylinder back on the forklift.  I spoke with our propane vendor and was told that we could refuel either way, cylinder on or off the forklift.

Also, while refueling with LP Gas, do you know if it is required that the transfer training operation is under direct supervision at least three (3) full cycles? - or is this just good safe practices?

    Any help would be appreciated.

29 CFR §1910.178(l)(3) - Training program content.  Powered industrial truck operators shall receive initial training in the following topics, except in topics which the employer can demonstrate are not applicable to safe operation of the truck in the employer's workplace.

§1910.178(l)(3)(i)(K) - Refueling and/or charging and recharging of batteries.

Nothing about how many cycles and no specifications on how to go about the refueling process.  You'll want to check with the forklift manufacturer or read the forklift manual.  I'm almost positive it will tell you to remove the propane tank, but read through to be sure.
