I wanted to pose a question for those of you that track the number of days without a lost time injury. For example, you have an injury that occured on 5/1/08, but they do not lose anytime until today. What date do you use to begin tracking your record from now? Do you use 5/1/08 since that was the date of injury or do you use todays date since that is when it became lost time? Thank you in advance for your input.

    Chris,

Look at 1904.7(b)(3)(i) and (ii). Based upon those paragraphs, I would use the 5/01/2008. Also, take a look at the OSHA Form 300, Column D states "Date of Injury or Onset of Illness". Columns K and L describe the number of days on restricted duty and number of days away from work. Conceivably, you could have an employee injured on 5/1 goes on restricted duty 5/7 and is out on 5/14. In this case, column D would be 5/1. Column K would be from 5/07 to 5/13 and column L would be from 5/14 to the present date. I would keep copious notes on this situation. From my experience, it sounds like you have the start of a worker's comp lawsuit.

Correct!  From the OSHA log standpoint we begin tracking lost time days from the day they go off work.  I should have made myself more clear in my original posting.  My question was related to tracking for lost time goals.  We are tracking the days and man hours without a lost time injury, and I wanted to see how other companies handle this situation.  Thank You!

For a Safety Scoreboard I would use the date of the accident.
