At the mill that I am presently working at, one of the major concerns for safety is dealing with the mobile equipment and some safe corrective actions that can be taken in order to reduce near misses and property damage before major incidents occur.  Our main concern at this point is fork trucks speeding while inside buildings.  Does anyone have any suggestions or best practices that may help us reduce these unsafe conditions?

    Thanks, Chase

    Chase,

I manage the safety at a large harvesting company and deal with this issue all the time.  So what I did was video taped them, took a reading with a speed radar gun and then sat everyone down that I taped and had forklift safety training all over again.  Well lets say this only worked for the first few weeks then they were back to their old ways.  So what I did was had the forklift company come out and put throttle limiters on the gas pedal so they could only go SLOW ALL THE TIME.  This seems to work and has dropped our forklift accidents by 75% just in the first 6 months!!

    Hopefully this helps you.
