I have a maintenance employee that wants to use stilts to reach the ceiling where caulking and sealing needs to be done.  The floor is flat with a non-slip coating. There are no windows or holes he could fall through.  He will have another working walking (without stilts) next to him the whole time. The task will be done when the plant is shut down, so only he and his assistant will be in the room; no one to bump into him. The ceiling is 10-11 feet high.

From what I have read, it looks like I am good with the regs.  What do you guys think?  Any special training that I should do?  Any documentation I would need to protect our liability?

Part of me feels this may be safer than the up and down on a ladder; which is how they were completing this task.

I think you are right as far as the regs go in the US. I understand they are banned in Canada and elsewhere.

The key is whether it will represent an acceptable risk. If this guy has a lot of experience on stilts, I would say that is a definite maybe. If he does not--not in my plant!

A better alternative may be one of the small rolling scaffolds.
