  • Number of First Aid Responders

    Everyone,

As you know, 29 CFR 1910.151 requires the use of first aid responders when other medical responders are not available in 3-4 minutes.

My question is "How many responders do I need?" I know some of my decision is going to based upon the configuration of my facility and the processes taking place. Has anyone seen or established a ratio of employees to responders? e.g. 50:1, 100:1

    Thanks,

     MikeCJ

Since I can't find anything written in stone, I've always thought it would be up to your discretion based on building size, layout, processes, number of employees, etc.  Although my primary focus is in construction, I've seen the ratio vary.  On some jobs, they tell us, "You must have a minimum of two.  That way you're covered if one is out sick."  We usually have three or four per job with usually no more than 70 people per job (we've had as many as over 120... making the ratio 30:1 at times).  If we have a multi-story building, we try to keep one provider per floor work is being done on.
