  • Pallet racking and exit routes

Can pallet racking with boxes on them be positioned on each side of the exit door/route as long as the width is a minimum of 28 inches?

  • PowerPoints with sound

A buddy of mine told me had obtained some PowerPoint safety meetings that had sound added to them. He thought they were pretty useful in that it almost completely eliminated the need for him to develop something to say while the slides were posted. My comment was this sounds an awful lot like a video, why not just buy one of those. Anybody have an opinion on this - would you suggest i try these powerpoint plus sound meetings?

  • ASSE Conference

I noticed that there is an ASSE conference this week. Has anyone attended one of those - if so, did you find it useful? I am trying to figure out if it would be a good thing to attend as a safety manager at a mid-size manufacturing company, and how i might make a case for attending to by boss. P.S. Anybody reading this in attendance at ASSE? What;s going on?

  • Re: Uninterested Crew

A more cynical question might be, has anyone ever dealt with an interested crew on a construction site? It's a constant battle and the outcome is often very dependent on the personalities of the group's informal leaders. I am very curious to hear some suggestions too.

  • Beard and a Dust Mask?

We are having a debate. If an employee has a beard is he permitted to wear a dust mask? I am saying no, it would interfere under the respiratory protection regulations, my boss say it's ok, a dust mask isnt a real respirator. If I am right the choices are unpleasant - make him shave or give him a new assignment.

  • Re: pre work inspections

You have a great policy. Pity you are having trouble getting management support for such an important initiative - penny wise... If you have had any actual accidents or near misses that might have been prevented by a pre-work inspection that might help your case. Also, estimate how much time and money would be expended if just one accident occured, vs the time spent on these pre-work inspections . My bet - the inspections are a heckuva great investment. Hang in there

  • Automatic defibrillators

Hi, The boss came back from a conference and told us we should install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in our workplace. I'm not so sure about that. I've heard a lot of questions about liabilties and training and other problems. Anybody know what the law - and best practice - is on this issue? Thanks.

  • Re: ipods and accidents

I hear you. It's kind of like Mayor Bloomberg trying to ban cellphones in the NYC schools. Just about everybody has one and views it as their inaliable right to use it.
